Rep. Vargas’ Statement on Trump Executive Order Banning Immigrants from Census

Washington, D.C. (June 21, 2020) – Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) released the following statement in response to reports that the Trump administration is considering an executive order preventing undocumented individuals from being counted in the 2020 Census.

“Ensuring that ALL individuals are counted in the Census is a bipartisan issue. The administration is threatening to distort the 2020 Census count with yet another anti-immigrant order. This is unconstitutional and completely unacceptable.

"By law, the Census must count every single person in our nation. Everyone counts regardless of where they were born or their immigration status.

“Our communities will not be silenced. I encourage everyone to participate in the Census today. The U.S. Census population count is a confidential and fundamental part of our nation’s identity and will impact our communities for the next 10 years. Fill out the Census today at 2020census.gov.”

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County, and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border. Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress. He serves on the House Financial Services Committee and House Foreign Affairs Committee.
